Ads go after lucrative 'impulse smell' buyers
Picture this: there you are, minding your own business at the bus stop, when you take a deep breath. What's that smell? No, it isn't the hobo urine stink you're used to. Cookies? Fresh from the oven cookies? Well, cookies fresh from the oven that a hobo peed on, I guess. Just what is going on here?
You've just experienced a new type of advertising! I call it smell-o-vision, and it could become the most annoying innovation in advertising since the advent of commercials that are louder than the shows they interrupt. The "Got Milk?" campaign was the first to sign on, making bus shelters smell like cookies so people would want some milk. Naturally, people hated this, as not everyone wants to smell some chemical adhesive that is designed to smell like baked goods when they're just trying to get to work. We get assaulted with enough gross smells every day without advertisers paying to get to our nostrils as well. Predictably, the ads were removed early after multiple complaints. Does this spell the end for smell-o-vision? Time will tell.
