Microsoft lets users probe co-workers' brains

Microsoft unveiled some new search features in its server software today that allows users to search not only documents but the minds of their fellow workers as well. The software searches through the documents and e-mails of employees and automatically creates profiles of expertise and sets up department networks, à la social-networking sites like MySpace. As people have more knowledge about areas of their jobs than may be held on a hard drive, the aim of the service is to help users connect with the right people with the information they need — or at someone who can lead them to it. Microsoft hopes any privacy concerns will be deflected by the transparency of the system, which allows users to view and approve their profiles before they're made available to the rest of the company. All you need to know: "Not my department" is no longer a viable excuse.
