As good as Google Glass's voice recognition is, it's prone to failure, especially in noisy situations. Nothing beats a good keyboard or keypad. A Samsung patent filed in August of last year, but just made public, could solve the problem of typing for smart glasses.
Thanks to science fiction, we've all got this idea that anything that's projected — holograms, screens, or whatever — is futuristic. While infrared-projected keyboards have existed for years, they've been banished to basements for a simple reason: they're terrible.
With a new age of wearable technology dawning on us, it might be time to revisit projected keyboards. According to a Samsung patent filed at the World Intellectual Property Organization (PDF), the company might be cooking something pretty sick. The patent describes a way for a camera (presumably for Samsung's "Galaxy Glass" Google Glass rival) that's capable of projecting an augmented reality keyboard directly onto your fingers.
To type, a person would merely have to use his/her thumbs to tap on their fingers. In the image at the very top of this post, a QWERTY layout is spread across all parts of the fingers, while the image below shows a T9-style keypad. We can't imagine you'll get a high-typing speed by thumb-typing on your fingers, but then again, people said typing on touchscreens would never catch on and look how that turned out. Samsung is said to have explored a full-on keyboard projected onto a surface, but ultimately realized the technology would be too expensive to put into a consumer product.
Until we see a real-working product, consider all of this a concept. Samsung may or may not have a real-working prototype in its labs. One has to wonder though, how would this affect battery life for smart glassses? Samsung is rumored to be releasing its Galaxy Glass later this year. I guess we'll have to wait until then to see if this patented projection keyboard makes the cut or not.
