Image of the Day: A small dot on Mars

In the exact center of this picture, taken by the HiRISE camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, is a very small dot. The very small dot is Curiosity, quite possibly the most expensive and sophisticated robot ever built. Looking closely, you can even see the tracks that the rover left as it drove across Mars, angling upwards and slightly to the left.

This is not the first time that an orbiting satellite has snapped a picture of a robot on Mars, but at least for yours truly, that doesn't make this image any less magical. It highlights how alien and lonely this place is, and how incredible it is that we've got a robot (several robots, in fact) wandering around up there, exploring for us.
