Image of the Day: Rings of Mars

Credit: NASA/JPL/University of Arizona

This image of Schiaparelli Crater on Mars shows a mix of concentric layered rock and sand. In places, the sand ends up in streaks perpendicular to the layers. Nobody knows exactly where the layers came from, or why the sand does what it does. The pictures are pretty amazing, but we'll need to go do some exploring for ourselves to find out for sure.
