A team of researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have built a bouncy six-legged robot dubbed X-RHex-Light, or RHex for short. The robot was created to further the UPenn team's research outlined in their paper "Toward a Vocabulary of Legged Leaping." And also to execute some very cool parkour moves.
During the project, RHex learned how to execute a running leap, a backflip and even a leaping grab — all for the betterment of future robot kind. The thought is that a robot that can traverse gaps and climb tall surfaces can also right itself if it is knocked over, which any robot might need to do, now and again.
