What the world needs: more scorpions!
Scorpions have earned a special place in our collective hearts: we sometimes use them for science, and we (many to most of us) are generally terrified of them. Mixing a slick exoskeleton with a nice, lightning-fast, stinging tail makes for a grumpy looking arachnid.
Well, we (the human race) just found a new species of the little buggers!
Dr. Rob Bryson, Jr. found the new species in the Santa Catalina Mountains while looking for something else entirely. While this might not have immediate implications for the regular Joe (the scorpion isn’t even named yet), it does point to an amazing fact: in our world today, new species can still be found here in the United States.
In fact, for more than 50 years, only four species of mountain scorpions were known in Arizona. In the past six years, six more species were discovered. This is from 2007 to 2013, an amazing statistic.
And, of course, you have the little guy in the photo above to worry about now!
