Construction begins on southern hemisphere's tallest building

A 1,273-foot luxury hotel and apartment complex was just given the green light to begin construction down under in Australia. Called Australia 108, the project is due for completion in 2018. Not only will Australia 108 be the tallest building on the continent, it will exceed Q1 as the tallest building in the entire southern hemisphere.

Fender Katsalidis Architects won the bid to design this wonderfully futuristic luxury skyscraper. It will have, you guessed it, 108 floors of beautifully integrated residential homes, a six star hotel (they have those), restaurants and bars, and a grocery store.

Australia 108 may remain that country's tallest building for quite a while, but South Africa's widely anticipated Centurion-Symbio City in Tshwane may soon become the tallest in the southern hemisphere. Upon completion, this massive structure will top out at about 1,467 feet.
