Redbox's new streaming video app blocks jailbroken iOS devices

Netflix has found its newest competitor in Redbox Instant, a new video streaming service that apparently has a moral center. It won’t work on a jailbroken iOS device. According to TechCrunch, users with jailbroken iOS devices will get a "device is compromised" error message instead.

The streaming system had a beta launch in December and came complete with apps for Android and iOS. This week, it publicly debuted with about 4,600 titles that are available for $6 a month. For $2 more, you can get four DVDs a month at your local Redbox kiosk.

For a small comparison, that’s about $2 and 55,000 movies less than Netflix’s current system. And then, of course, there’s the jailbreak issue. About 7 million iOS devices (iPhones, iPads and iPod touches) were jailbroken as of February. Those can run Netflix but not Redbox.

Now, we wait to see if anyone cares.
