Concept art for Disney World's AVATAR Land revealed

The idea of an AVATAR Land being built in one of Disney's parks has been kicking around for a couple of years now. But until now, we didn't really have any idea of what that might look like. James Cameron's planet of Pandora is full of creatures and landscapes that exist on an epic scale. Floating islands and massive trees are populated by bioluminescent creatures and plants of all kinds. Surely, recreating that sort of terrain in the real world coudn't be possible.

Except that Disney already has a tree that resembles Cameron's ill-fated Hometree. It's the centerpiece of Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando, which is now slated to become the eventual new home of the Navi, the Banshees and many other denizens of Pandora. AVATAR Land is slated to open in 2016, which means that Disney's construction crews are going to need to hustle once they get the go-ahead to start bulldozing next year.

Once the new area opens, park guests will be greeted by interactive landscapes that seem to come to life at every touch. There will also be a Banshee-riding attraction as well as what looks like a serene boat ride through the bioluminescent forest. Even the Animal Kingdom's massive Tree of Life will bioluminesce come sundown. For even more hints at what may await AVATAR Land's future visitors, take a look at the video and gallery below.
