Nokia hires 55-piece orchestra to be the boss of ringtones

Classical ringtones strike the right tone with Nokia. After a recent study showed that classical music ringtones were the most popular, they hired the 55-piece Bratislava Symphony Orchestra to create 25 original classical tunes for Nokia Lumia models.

Ringtones and signature sounds are criticial for most companies to establish brand recognition. Nokia is no exception. The pieces were originally composed by their in-house sound designers, who worked to get the compositions just right before the orchestra finished the pieces.

Creating a music for a phone isn't simple. It must be short and instantly recognizable. Aleksi Eeben,is one of the sound designer at Nokia explained the challenge to The Telegraph:

"The 25 original pieces, called 'miniatures' were composed by five Nokia Design in-house sound designers. We started exploring the idea through contemporary classical and film music, However, the final result was original pieces that are distinctively ring tones: they are short, and they all have a functional sounds element."

Audio producers from Epic Sound also worked on the composition and arranging of the music. In the ringtone game, it's not enough to just have a lovely little tune - it has to become recognizable and produced specifically for the platform.

No doubt wrangling the sound from a 55-piece orchestra was difficult, but given the popularity of the genre on their phones, Nokia's 25 pieces were tweaked to take sound of a living, breathing orchestra to a new level.

Asbjoern Andersen, from Epic Sound noted how different this project was — this wasn't a studio full of synthesizer music that generates many ring tones, this was a full orchestra and they had to have an organic sound.

The stakes are pretty high. There are different models to consider and the vast amount of different environments a user could hear the music. Nokia's mobile sounds are heard at a staggering rate of about a billion times a day — that means they have to be quality and engaging for the user. With this kind of broad base of needs it's no wonder Nokia will employ everything from an orchestra, in house designers and audio production firms to make sure everything sounds amazing.

Some of the 25 original classical recordings are already public and available on the new Nokia Lumia 920 and the Nokia Lumia 820.

Some of the recordings are already available on the new Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820. They will be available on some soon-to-be released smartphone models.

Not to worry — for the rest of you who are tiring of your Gangam Style ring tone, the new classical tunes will be available to other soon-to-be-released models.
