Image of the Day: Relay 1 satellite launched 50 years ago today

Fifty years ago today NASA launched Relay 1 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

This was the first satellite to broadcast television to Japan from the United States and in August of 1964, it worked alongside Syncom 3 to transmit the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. This was the first time that two satellites were used simultaneously for one broadcast.
